Thinking about a song from the weekend. "Brokenness is what I long for, brokenness is what I need." I wonder about that. Yes, it might be what we need.
But is it what we long for?
When you long for something, you really really desire it. How can we long for something that really, really hurts. Brokenness really, really hurts. So how can we long for it?
Maybe we know we should have it, or we would be accepting of it in the long run for the good it will do us.
But long for it? I think the words are wrong. I think we are not thinking when we are singing this song.

Hey there,
I'm just doing some research for a message I'm going to be giving at my church on "Humility" from James 4:1-12. I haven't preached very much so I like to do ALOT of research.
This is a resource I found on the net when searching on "brokenness is what I long for"... its actually a bible study by the writer (or the person who changed the lyrics to include the word "brokenness") of that song.

I believe God wants us humble and to be truly humble I also believe we need to be broken, crushed by God to conform to his standards. I'm not saying this based on whether I have or haven't, just that I think it's really important.
I appreciate your comment that we don't often "long" to be broken... but I disagree that we *shouldn't* "long" to be broken. In some obscure way, its like a "tool" not longing to be smashed on the anvil, but I bet its appreciated once it is a fantastically useful tool.
Check out the bible study about by Jeff Deyo, and the bible passages referenced, as well as James 4:1-12 and I would love your feedback!
I hope I don't sound rude or accusing, or anything like that!!
God bless
